Description

IC 405 is a name that does not capture the splendor of this celestial object. It is also known as the Flaming Star Nebula, a name that evokes the fiery colors and shapes that adorn the sky. It is a place where stars are born and die, where matter and energy interact in complex ways, where the laws of physics and chemistry create wonders that we can barely comprehend.

The nebula is a result of the interaction between a runaway star and a cloud of gas and dust. The star, AE Aurigae, was ejected from the Orion Nebula about 2.5 million years ago, after a close encounter with another star. It is now moving at a speed of 200 kilometers per second, and colliding with the interstellar medium. The star's powerful radiation and stellar wind ionize and heat the surrounding gas, creating a shock wave that compresses and shapes the nebula. The nebula is a combination of emission and reflection nebulae, which produce different colors depending on the nature of the light source and the medium. The nebula is about 5 light-years across, and lies about 1,500 light-years from Earth in the constellation of Auriga, the Charioteer. It is a beautiful and dynamic example of the cosmic cycle of life and death.
